NYCC 2013 Part 1 026

Sanity be Damned, this is New York Comic Con!

So New York Comic Con might be over, but I won’t be leaving the Big Apple for a few more days. I’ll be recording a video review of the con once I get home, but I wanted to share some of the Supergirl highlights of my first NYCC experience. There were tons of amazing cosplayers, but what made my weekend was meeting such incredible people like Amanda Connor and Josh Ortega for the first time, and saying hello to a few old friends like Jon Hughes who made me an amazing Supergirl commission, and Mahmud Asrar.

Eventhough I’ve cosplayed before as Robin from Arkham City, my Gears of War COG armor that I made and wore for a few days at the con was really special. You’ll see me in a few pics wearing the costume.

I’ve added some pictures below, but you can find the entire photo album on the Facebook page right here. I should have the video review up by the weekend, and will show off some of the incredible statues and artwork I picked up this past weekend. In the meantime, enjoy the pics!

Fan Expo 2013 047

The Fan Expo Experience

So ends another con, and the sheer madness that goes along with it. It was my first time to Fan Expo in Toronto, and to quote George Takei, “Oh My” what an experience. I knew that the con was going to be packed, hell that’s even why I invested the money for a VIP pass, but nothing could have prepared me for the thousands in attendance on August 24th at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre.

Driving down to the con on the evening of August 23rd from Ottawa, Canada, I was feeling a bit under the weather, but I was determined to at least  see this con for the first time in person, no matter how brief. I originally wanted to meet Morena Baccarin (Homeland, Firefly, V) and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones, Terminator: TSCC), but both had cancelled before the con began. So, I figured I’d see Stan Lee and Laurie Holden (Walking Dead) while I was there. That didn’t happen either.

Boston Comic Con 2013 024

Supergirl and the Legion of Cosplayers from Boston Comic Con

So as promised, here are the highlights from the Boston Comic Con. In short, the con was an awesome time filled with incredible Supergirl art, fantastic cosplayers, and a jambalaya of comic book fandom that you can only find at one of these cons. Although the con wasn’t being held at it’s normal venue, the Hynes Convention Center, the Seaport World Trade Center certainly made a great substitute, all be it, a little bit small. But even it’s size couldn’t keep the masses from seeing their favorite comic book artists and writers, snapping a picture of a cosplayer dressed as their favorite comic book or sci-fi character, or waiting patiently in line for a panel on how to get your comic book published. This is comic con, and those of us who attend these conventions do it to celebrate our passion, and our geekdom.

Supergirls of San Diego

We all know that San Diego Comic Con is the biggest comic convention in the world. And if you didn’t know that, you do now. Thousands upon thousands of fans, cosplayers, fanboys and fangirls jam the San Diego Convention Center each year, and 2013 was no different. The con, which was held last weekend, hosted cosplayers of many different genres. From sci-fi to anime, to video games and fairy tale characters. It’s truly a site to see, and hopefully, next year, the Supergirl Homepage will be there.

Now amongst all these cosplayers, we here at the SHP are only interested in one kind of cosplayer. Supergirl. Below are some of the best cosplayers I can find from this year’s SDCC, best rest assured, there’s a lot more.

Ottawa Comic Con

Ottawa Comic Con Day 3 – The Finale

So ends another year of the Ottawa Comic Con. Today, which also happens to be Mother’s Day, had a much better turn out then I thought. I took the day to take a good look at the vendors and artist alley. Picked up some beautiful artwork from Neal Adams, Geoff Isherwood, and other independent artists from around Ottawa. I got to meet the legendary George Perez again, and he was nice enough to do a beautiful Wonder Woman sketch for me.

Ottawa Comic Con

Ottawa Comic Con Day 2 – A Firefly Experience

So ends another day at the Ottawa Comic Con. Like any typical con, Saturday’s are usually the busiest day, filled with long lines, huge crowds, and plenty of cosplay to check out. Today was no different. The day started with waiting though a huge line to get into the con, and then another one once we got in for the Firefly panel. As I mentioned, long lines are not unusual for the busiest day of any comic con.

Ottawa Comic Con 2

Ottawa Comic Con Day 1 – No Summer in Ottawa

I just got back from the first day of the Ottawa Comic Con, which was pushed to 3 days this year thanks to the tremendous turnout last year. Although I was really looking forward to this con, the day started on a sad note. One of my personal headliners I really wanted to see, Summer Glau had to cancel because she had lost her passport.

Daily Supergirl # 1

Evil Never Looked So Good

Kick off your week with Dark Supergirl. She is a beautiful Hungarian cosplayer by the name of Vivienne Kis. I came across her profile on Deviantart.com. She makes an incredible Harley Quinn too. You can see more of her at http://youei.deviantart.com/.

Ardella Cosplay as Power-Girl

Save Me Power Girl!

Seeing as I just posted the new Power Girl podcast this week, I thought it would only be fair to have some Power Girl cosplay. I can just imagine after that opening line that no one has left the page yet. I will admit there’s something about a beautiful woman transforming from common day civilian, to a larger then life superhero. That’s were the lovely Ardella comes in. Ardella is an amazing cosplayer hailing from Australia, who embodies the very essence of Power Girl in the video below.

Supergirl Sketch

Supergirl in a Flash

Getting a sketch at a comic convention from your favorite artist isn’t something new. In fact, it’s one the best things of going to a con.

Here’s a video of Francis Manapul, artist and co-writer on ‘The Flash,’ doing a Supergirl piece with an ink wash at this years San Diego Comic Con. It is time lapsed, but you can see the detail and talent that goes into every piece of art.

Video was uploaded by Kyle Higgins, who is best known as the writer of  “Nightwing” for DC Comics,  and was a guest blogger for Hero Complex at SDCC this year. Check out his blog here.
